Baronial Champions

Our Baronial Champions earn their positions for a one year term at their respective discipline’s championship. Most of our champions proudly earn the title of being the “Defender” of their discipline at Lord Defender’s with the exception of the Bardic champion who is selected at Celtic Bardic. Archery Champion

The Archery Champion of the Barony is the title awarded to the winner of the Archery tournament held during the Lord Defender’s Event each June. The competition for the Archery Defender was added during the second tournament in August AS XX / 1985. The Archery Defender is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs during all official Court Functions. Two of the main requirement for this champion is that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following years tournament. The Archery Champion can be identified by Champions bow and quiver and Blue archers hood which is carried for the year they serve in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position.

 

Arts & Sciences Champion

The Arts & Sciences Champion of the Barony is the title is awarded to the winner of the Arts & Sciences tournament held during the Lord Defender’s Event each June. The competition for the Arts & Sciences Defender was also added during the second tournament in August AS XX / 1985.Two of the main requirement for this champion is that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following years tournament. The Arts & Sciences Champion is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs during all official Court Functions. The Arts & Sciences Champion wears a Baldric and has a Staff which is carried for the year the person serves in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position. One of the requirements of the current defender is to add a special favor or symbol to the Champion’s Staff during the year they serve and at the time of stepping down the Champion recites the legacy of the Staff and the significance of each of the symbols on it.

Bardic Champion

The Bardic Champion is selected at Celtic Bardic – an event led in the winter focused specifically on the Bardic arts.

Baronial Page

The Baronial Page is chosen each year during the Lord Defender’s event. The competition for Baronial Page was also added in August AS XXXV / 2000.The job of the Page is to assist the Baronial Coronets during the year of their office. The Page is chosen from a group of youngsters who compete for the job by following specific instructions and completing specific tasks that reflect jobs they may be called upon to do during their tenure as Page. This competition is open to youngsters age 10 and up since some maturity is required for the job. As with the other Champions the new Page is chosen in the competition designed by the outgoing Page.

Lord Defender

The Lord Defender of the Barony is the Heavy armored combat champion. The title is awarded to the winner of the tournament held during the Lord Defender’s Event each September. The first Lord Defender’s Championship Tournament was held in October of AS XVIII / 1984. The tournament has been held annually since then. Two of the main requirement for this champion is that they be willing to swear an Oath of Service to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following years tournament. The Lord Defender is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs during all official Court Functions. The Lord Defender can be identified by Champions Sword which he carries for the year he serves in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time since the Defender is in charge of running the tournament to select his successor. A person is able to hold the position a total of three times.

 

Shield of the Barony

The Shield of the Barony is the title awarded to the winner of the new heavy combat fighters tournament held on Sunday of the Lord Defender’s Event. The competition for the Shield of the Barony was added in June of AS XXVI / 1991. The first and foremost requirement to compete in this tournament is that the fighter have been fighting for less than three years and have never won another tournament. In addition the requirement for this champion is that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following years tournament. The Shield of the Barony can be identified by the round shield with the Boss ornamented by the Baronial Crossed Daffodils that he carries during the year he holds the position. The position can only be held one year due to the requirement that those who enter can never have won a tournament and the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor.

 

Rapier Champion

The Rapier Champion of the Barony is the Fencing combat champion. The title is awarded to the winner of the tournament held during the Lord Defender’s Event each June. The competition for the Rapier Defender was added in June of AS VII / 1992. Two of the main requirement for this champion is that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following years tournament. The Rapier Defender is the Baroness Champion and stands behind the Baroness chair during all official Court Functions. The Rapier Champion can be identified by Champions Rapier and Blue cloak which he carries for the year he serves in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select his successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position.

 

Thrown Weapons Champion

The Thrown Weapons Champion of the Barony is the title awarded to the winner of the Thrown Weapons tournament held during the Lord Defender’s Event each June. The competition for Thrown Weapons Champion was added in August AS XXXV / 2000. Two of the main requirement for this champion is that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following years tournament. The Thrown Weapons Defender is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs during all official Court Functions. The Thrown Weapons Champion can be identified by Champions Axe (which is actually being made at the present time and will be a Damascus axe head carried in a fancy belt holder) which is carried for the year they serve in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position.
